Hugo O'Conor

. . . and his link to the current owners, the Concannons

A grand circular driveway lined with tall palm trees and bougainvillea grace the entrance to The Manning House Estate.

Atop the hill on the lush green lawn stands a bronze life-size statue of Hugo O'Conor.  O'Conor was the Commandant Inspector General of the Interior Provinces of New Spain who founded Tucson's Presidio in 1775 on behalf of the Spanish Government.

When you visit the mansion, be sure to see the monument and read the fascinating history of Tucson's founding father, including a copy of the original order establishing the Royal Spanish Presidio of San Agustin del Tucson.

Ironically, the Concannon family, owners of The Manning House, were related to the O'Conors in the 10th century in Ireland.

Legend has it that the older brother of the Concannon Clan was dissatisfied with the services of the castle Abbot and he discharged the Abbot against the wishes of Concannon's younger brother.  Distraught by his older brother's action, the younger Concannon disassociated himself with the Concannon Clan and formed his own Clan, to be known as the O'Conor Clan.

Consequently, in retaliation for his dismissal, the Abbot placed a curse upon anyone with a Concannon surname.  In 1989, over 300 Concannon descendants from all across the globe gathered in Ireland and performed a ceremony to remove the curse.  No one knows if the curse-lifting ceremony was successful.
